Dia de los Muertos

Lower School Spanish Teacher Lisi Arrarte writes, "This month, the LS Spanish program has been focusing on making cultural connections and studying the Central American celebration of Dia de los Muertos. Grade 3 and 4 students have spent the whole month learning about the history, traditions and different regional celebrations of Dia de los Muertos, as well as learning lots of vocabulary in Spanish to support the learning.

"The study has been centered around a Spanish poem that the students translated and have been working with. Señorita Marianne shared some of her experiences in Guatemala and the tradition they have involving giant kites. If you visit the Grade 4 pod or look at the bulletin board outside the Spanish classroom, there are some examples of kites that the students created as a class.

"The Spanish classes have also been working in collaboration with Ms. Jordan and Tina in art where the students have been decorating skull masks. We have documented this procedure and they will be using the pictures to do a project in technology also!"

Our picture shows the students playing a game to test their grasp of Spanish vocabulary associated with Dia de los Mertos.

Team building in K1

Kindergarten Team Leader and K1 Teacher Patrick writes, "We want to share with the community what the class worked on last week. Instead of each student choosing what they wanted to do during Free Choice, we cleared the tables and everyone explored with the blocks. It was wonderful to see solo and cooperative play as the hour went by. Negotiation, compromise, awareness of others' space and the sharing of materials were all skills used. They used ideas from each other and changed original ideas to fit the needs of the group."

Great job, Patrick's class!

Athletics Director Sandy Lloyd writes, "ASL hosted the first ever Boys Soccer 8 team Division 1 ISST tournament at Canons Park on 8-10 November. The caliber of play was extremely high and all games were hard fought. After a tough start, the Eagles won their last game vs. the American School of the Hague 1-0. Nils ’13 and Alex ’15 were selected to the All ISST Tournament team. The sportsmanship and effort exhibited by the Eagles was exemplary! Go Eagles!"

Middle School Technology Coordinator Colin Bridgewater, whose photographs we are privileged to use in this article, also reported great spirit during the games—typified in the picture below of players on opposing teams working together to rectify a cleat malfunction!

A wonderful community fundraising effort for ACST

We are thrilled to report that the grand total raised by the ASL community for the American Cooperative School of Tunis (ACST) is £4,000!

When our community heard of the tragedy that befell ACST, following the attack on the US Embassy in Tunis on 14 September, ASL students rallied in support. Arson, looting and vandalism virtually destroyed ACST and devastated its community. (The picture above shows members of the ACST community trying to salvage usable equipment from a ransacked technology lab.) In typical fashion, ASL students wanted to know how they could help and quickly set to work organizing fundraising initiatives around the School.

K-12 Service Learning Coordinator Tamatha Bibbo writes, "What a great success for ACST and ASL! Thank you for supporting this drive. I want everyone to know the amount we will be sending over to Tunis this week in addition to the letter from Mr. Bullard's class and the bookmarks from the Lower School.

"From collecting jars in all divisions, a HS bake sale, money raised at the "We Haz Jazz" Grade 4 musical, and the sale of ASL Bands Together wristbands, the School has raised an incredible £2,961.14!"

In addition to this amazing effort, Head of School Coreen R. Hester and ASL's administration have pledged funds from the School's emergency disaster fund, bringing the grand total to £4,000.

Ms. Bibbo says, "Thanks to everyone who contributed to this fabulous community effort."

The picture below shows students with a check for the funds raised by wristband sales.

High School English Teacher Peggy Elhadj writes, "On Thursday, 15 November, students from English elective class Modern World Literature: Middle East, Afghanistan and Pakistan, observed Taliban Day. The Taliban rules, as specified in the novel A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini, requires that females not leave their homes unless accompanied by a male member of their family. Moreover, there are strict rules about the dress code and behavior of these women, such as covering their hair and as much of their body as possible, not wearing make-up or nail polish (if caught doing so, the polished fingers will be cut off), not looking other males in the eyes and not laughing. The males and females in the class were paired up and the males escorted their female partners to classes, to their lockers and to the ladies' room. Students will write a reflection of their experience."

Congratulations to the middle school FIRST Lego League robotics teams that competed with 11 other schools in the fifth annual FLL London Regional Tournament held at ASL on Saturday, 1 December. ASL teams brought home the Regional Championship, along with trophies for the Robot Challenge, Research Project, and Core Values. Following this dominating performance, the Grade 8 members of the Fantastic 4 and Sprog Theory will combine to form an all-star Griffin Sprog team, which will represent ASL for the third year running at the UK/Ireland National Championships in January.

ASL has been hosting the FIRST Lego League London Regional for five years. It was organized by Grade 6 math teacher Maida Shivik and MS Technology Coordinator Colin Bridgewater, and made possible by an army of volunteers from the ASL/QK FIRST Robotics Team, The Griffins. Thanks also to the judges from the ASL community, including ASL teachers and staff from all three divisions as well as ASL parents.

ASL students serve family meals at the Winch

This past week, five HS students launched the Winch Family Meals, part of ASL's community partnership after-school program at the Winchester Project. Students taking part in the cooking project will prepare and serve evening meals on Wednesdays for families whose children attend the Winch in their after-school program. The meal is also open to all clients and families in the Swiss Cottage area.

Grade 7 Aide and Community Partnership Coach Sean Ross writes, "This is just one of the many great projects that the Winch and ASL collaborate on. On Wednesday, we planned for 30 people and ended up feeding more than 50. It was a huge success! Kids ranging in ages from 4 to 16, and staff sat down at 6 pm to enjoy a simple, but tasty, pasta dish with peppery rocket and spring onion salad, and homemade garlic bread. The atmosphere was warm and content as everyone ate together. It was a great evening! The HS students helped with the cooking and contributed brilliantly. In addition, the grant received from the PCA has made a huge difference by enabling us to purchase plates and bowls, and has increased our food budget. Everyone involved with the project is very grateful!"

It's 12:12:12 on the 12th day of the 12th month 2012! We asked 12 12-year-old students to take time out of recess to say "cheese" as we captured this monumental moment—the last sequential date to occur in the 21st century. Thanks to the middle schoolers who helped us celebrate this point in time at ASL!

ASL community spreads joy with holiday gift drive

As part of the weekly service learning after-school program, ASL students visit Doorstep Homeless Families Shelter to work with children in the homework club and recreation center. Earlier this fall, Mafalda ’14 was speaking with children at Doorstep about the upcoming holidays.

"When I realized that most of these kids won't receive any presents, and most of them weren't going to be with their families, I knew I had to do something."

Mafalda worked with K-12 Service Learning Coordinator Tamatha Bibbo to organize a holiday gift drive in the High School. A paper tree hung in Senior Hall, with more than 100 ornaments, each listing a child's name and age. Students, parents and faculty/staff were asked to pick an ornament and bring back a wrapped gift.

The response was terrific! The ASL community gave 129 presents (plus an extra 22 for new children).

Ms. Bibbo said, "This has been such a humbling experience and the response from the community was overwhelming. Because of the generosity, we're able to give each child at Doorstep something special this holiday season."

Students help to make holidays merry and bright for families at The Winch

Grade 8 students in the service-learning elective class wrapped up their semester by delivering used toys to The Winchester Project, an ASL community partnership based in Swiss Cottage that offers opportunities to local families and encourages children to reach their potential. The students organized a used toy drive in the Middle School that collected gently used dolls, cars, puzzles, games, etc., for the children who attend The Winch.

Students in Grade 3 also brought in used toys to contribute to the drive. In total, there were about eight large bags of toys that were gratefully accepted by Kim Mabbutt, play development officer. Further, the Grade 7 service-learning class organized a bake sale to raise funds for The Winch. A check for £255 was delivered along with the gifts. The money will be used to benefit the children at The Winch and to help support their annual holiday party.

The students received this thank-you note from Kim at The Winch:

"I just wanted to say a great big THANK YOU to you and all the organisers and students who so kindly donated such wonderful toys and games, and also for the huge effort, kindness and time spent raising money with the bake sale so that we could buy each of our children a Christmas present.

"As I said yesterday, I consider our relationship with ASL more than just a brilliant partnership, but that you are truly a part of our Winch Family. Please pass on my message to all involved."
